    Céad Míle Fáilte!
    A Hundred Thousand Welcomes!

The Grove of Dana was created for the purpose of providing a free course of learning in the subject of Druidic spirituality and the primal Earth-honoring Celtic traditions. Although much of the readings and work will focus on the traditions of Ireland, we welcome those who are interested in or practicing other traditions. Where possible, information will be expanded to include these traditions.

Dana (sometimes Danu) is revealed as a mother goddess of the tribe, our ancestor by tradition. She, as with the other members of the Tuatha Dé Danann, according to the Book of Invasions, ‘excelled in Druidry’. In so doing, she recognised the divine primal energy of the Earth Mother that flowed through her and by excelling in Druidry she moved into a relationship of co-creation with the Earth Mother. Such is the case for each of us!

Secondly, Danu as an earth spirit, recognised that she, like each of us, is part of Nature. We are not divorced from the world in which we live. We are all inter-connected and inter-related. What we do to the land we do to ourselves. When we read that Danu ‘excelled in Druidry’ we can understand that Danu recognised her intimate bond with all of the Earth Mother’s children. It is Her example that enables us to recognise this lesson!

Finally, Danu’s name reveals how the Earth Mother’s primal spiritual energy moves through us just as it moves through the rest of the land. The ancestral tribal mother goddess is often referred to by the name Danu or Dana. The word Dana can be traced back to the Danube River, the area around which the Celtic people emerged. The Indo-European root da means “flowing” or “to flow”. Similarly the root danu, which is derived from the prefix da,means “river”. Dana or Danu thus has many associations with waters and the flowing motion of rivers. This makes it a particularly appropriate word to illustrate a “flowing” energy which can be seen in the sense of a soul-nurturing presence which finds it origin within the Earth Mother. This vivid image of how the Earth Mother’s primal energy moves through us and the land, is what enables us to understand the Balance between light and dark and order and chaos. It is this primal flowing energy of the Earth Mother that holds the power of creation and destruction, of life, death, and rebirth, bringing us into contact with our deeper self. Again, it is through the example of Danu’s very name, that we come to recognise how the Earth Mother’s energy flows through us and everything on the planet!

We can recognise this lesson through the example of our ancestral tribal mother goddess, Danu, who came to recognise her intimate bond with the Earth Mother and her children, and, as Druids, grow in our awareness as co-creators with the Earth Mother.

The material you will find throughout the courses at the Grove of Dana will be based on an understanding that the Earth Mother, as exemplified by Dana (Danu), is simultaneously all three of these things, and that like the knotwork so famous in Celtic culture, it weaves and wraps each of these concepts around each other.

The Grove works towards the goal of fostering a true understanding of the self and the universe in which we all live, by exploring the trinity of knowledge, experience, and wisdom. Many educational programs merely require the student to learn by examining things as if they are outside objects, without allowing the student to feel their inherent connection to their studies. Knowledge is the area of the mind and the intellect, and is important to any educational endeavor, however knowledge alone will get us nowhere. As well as offering intellectual readings and assignments, our courses will also require the student to gain experience through certain exercises and meditations. Only through experience can we come to understand the knowledge we have, and thus gain the third part of our triad: wisdom. Wisdom is the product of experience and knowledge, just as mist is the product of water and air.

The college is set up in three different "grades" based on those outlined by literary sources: bard, or fili; ovate, or fáith; and druid, or draoi. These titles were never intended to be "grades" in any sense of progression, but rather distinct professions among the intellectual class of Celtic people. However, in order to make our courses more comprehensible, we have adopted these titles for our courses, which do serve to denote progression. Our aim is to take people through a study in Celtic and Druidic spirituality, not to train people to serve these roles, as that takes many more years of study, practice, and experience than we can offer here. We want to give people a firm grasp on the subject, and where they decide to take their studies and pursuits from there, is a matter of their own sovereignty. That being said, we have used the inspiration gained from each of these professions to serve as the basis of our "grades". When one is a member of the bardic grade they will learn appropriate knowledge and skills that are firmly rooted in the spirit of the bard. The same goes for the ovates and druids. After completion of these three grades, the student may decide whether or not they want to specialize in a certain area. These may include Celtic seership, mythology, history, healing, poetry, ritual, a combination of these things, or a self chosen study. The purpose of this is to guide the student in an independent research of their particular field of interest. This means that it will require a lot more work and research on the student's part.

The standard college courses of Bard, Ovate and Druid are entirely free of cost (aside from any additional materials you choose to purchase), and open to all people with an interest. Specialisation courses are available to upgraded members for only 29.93 € / year. All courses are self-paced so you can work on them on your own time, without having to worry about deadlines for assignments, or it getting in the way of your job or schooling.

Site announcements

Welcome to the new Grove of Dana college!

by Super -

We are happy to announce that the Grove of Dana has been completely renewed as we switched college software from eFront to the newest version of Moodle. This allows for a more user-friendly user interface and thus for a better experience for both students and mentors.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to integrate course data from eFront into Moodle, meaning that you will not find any details here about previously completed courses, assignments or grades. You will have to re-enroll into the course (the enrolment key you received for the course(s) you enrolled in remains the same) and re-upload your assignments. Your mentor will then transfer over the grades you previously received.

If you are already fairly far advanced into a course, you have the option to continue doing the course in the old college until you have finished the course, on the condition that you can complete the course before the end of 2018. The next course you take will then be in the new Moodle environment. However, you are of course welcome to switch over to the new environment already, if you wish to do so, even if you are already far advanced into a course.

The old college environment of eFront can be found at this link:
http://www.druidcircle.org/college/

Please keep in mind that the old college environment of eFront will be phased out at the end of 2018. If you are taking a course and wish to finish it in eFront, you need to make sure that you have completed the course by December 2018 latest. If you think you will not be able to make that deadline, we strongly recommend to switch to Moodle right now, and re-upload your assignments.

Two new specialisation courses: Finding Your Dán & Exploring Your Dán

by Phoenix -
We are pleased to announce the launch of two new specialisation courses in the Grove of Dana online Druid college: Finding Your Dán and Exploring Your Dán, authored by Hawkmoon.

A prelude to our new courses

Each individual is unique. In all time, there is no one who looks exactly like you, thinks your thoughts, or feels your feelings. As a Druid, you hold within you a unique and designed soul purpose.

Druidry, through the auspices of the New Order of Druids, is intentionally fashioned to enable each individual member to learn to express the unique soul purpose that Sovereignty has placed within them. Each person has been equipped with the necessary personal design to embody and fulfil his/her soul purpose as Sovereignty’s ambassador to this current world, wherever they are situated.

Discovering this spiritually given soul purpose takes time, effort, and commitment. It requires study, fundamental interaction with other Druids and, uppermost, alignment with Sovereignty, Herself.

We find within the Mythic cycle that one third of the Nemedians, who later returned as the Tuatha De, left Ireland to go ‘north’ to learn Druidry in the Four Cities. Today, this learning is promoted through the New Order of Druids, and just as the Tuatha returned to Ireland ‘excelling in Druidry’ so we must return to our ‘place’ excelling in Druidry.

Natural talents are not the same as a spiritual soul purpose. They can arise without reference to the spiritual condition of the individual. Talents do not create change in the way the spiritual soul purpose can and will. Talents are given for a physical or social purpose that brings benefit to the world, but are used without a connection to the soul purpose and operate solely within the mundane world.

In contrast, the spiritual soul purpose benefits the human and other than human worlds – it enhances the personhood of the individual and the authority of Sovereignty, Goddess of the Land.

The soul is the most fundamental part of the individual. Thus, the soul purpose operates at the most profound level of the individual’s existence and operates through the ‘neart’ - the energy which arises when the individual is in alignment with Sovereignty. It flows through the individual to address the problems encountered within this existence. Thus, we can understand that a soul purpose can only be available to those who are in alignment with the purposes of Sovereignty.

It is useful to understand that very few individuals discover their soul purpose at the beginning of their training in Druidry. This purpose may remain undiscovered for years and only come to fruition at a particular time and place. It is, therefore, wise to realize that this may not be the purpose you think you need to fulfil.

The soul purpose is not just for use within the Druid community; it is to serve the world as well.
The soul purpose is a DUTY which needs to be fulfilled.

At this moment, the Dutch Druid Youth Course does not have a mentor available yet, as there are no graduates of the Dutch Ovate Youth Course at this point. However, the course book can already be purchased from our online bookstore at this link:

Graag laten we u weten dat de Druïden Jongerencursus vanaf nu ook beschikbaar is in het Nederlands. Studenten dienen deze twee cursussen te hebben voltooid voordat ze kunnen aanvangen met de Druïden Jongerencursus.
